Travel Behaviour Myths

What is the Projects to Reduce Emissions programme?

A key myth is that CO2 production somehow relates to vehicle emissions--the kind that produce smog. Local and central authorities create public campaigns that encourage tuned vehicles and increased awareness of pollutants but they confuse the public into believing CO2 reductions are related to visible vehicle emissions. Limited gains can be made by improving the efficiency of an engine, but encouraging this alone is likely to diminish the public’s understanding of the real issue of reducing CO2 because it is colourless, odourless and its production is a is a direct function of combustion, no matter how efficient or well-tuned the engine. The key issue is the efficiency of travel, not the efficiency of the engine.
